What to Do When Wisdom Teeth Become a Problem

What to Do When Wisdom Teeth Become a Problem

Wisdom teethare third molars that may or may not come in

Wisdom teethare third molars that may or may not come in. If you are like the average person, they come in sometime in your teens or early 20s. Most people get four of them, but some people have more or less – and some people never have them come in. if they are beginning to come in and causing you some pain, it’s important to get to a dentist to have them checked out.

Dentists always recommend a once a year check-up and this isn’t just to look at cavities. It’s also to look at the health of your gums, teeth, jaw bone, and more. If you are in the age range where your wisdom teeth are coming in, the dentist will look to see if they are coming in, how many you have, and whether they are coming in at the right angle.

Some wisdom teeth have been known to come in sideways. Others will come in straight but there won’t be enough room in the mouth for them, which can cause overcrowding amongst the other teeth. You may have gone through your teen years with straight teeth and then, if you choose to do nothing about these extra molars, you may suddenly have crooked teeth because of the overcrowding.

To avoid overcrowding or the teeth coming in sideways, dentists will schedule a wisdom tooth removal or extraction. This is simply when the teeth are pulled to avoid any kinds of problems. In most instances, they are removed under anesthesia by an oral surgeon because it can be an involved process – mainly because they have already become a problem.

When anesthesia is used, it’s an all-day procedure. Even if you are out after a few hours, it will take a while for you to recover entirely because you go completely under. You will need someone to accompany you to the dentist because you won’t be the one driving home when it’s all over. And you will be given some pain medication for the next few days. After that, you will be able to resume your normal eating habits. The gums will heal where the teeth have been extracted and it’s like they were never there.

The longer you wait to do something about wisdom teeth that are giving you a problem, the more risks you run of damaging your other teeth. You don’t want to end up with braces simply because you were too stubborn to see a dentist to have your third molars extracted. Some people are able to keep their molars in because there is enough room, however, this is not the most common – most people have them removed.

If you are going to the dentist on an annual basis, you probably won’t ever have problems with your wisdom teeth because your dentist will be watching for them and extract them before they pose a problem. If you have to make a special visit to your dentist solely for these molars, then you will likely have more of an involved process to get them out.

With an oral examination and x-rays of the mouth, Bellaire Facial Surgery Center can evaluate the position of the wisdom teeth and predict if there may be present or future problems. Studies have shown that early evaluation and treatment result in a superior outcome for the patient. Patients are generally first evaluated in the mid- teenage years by their dentist, orthodontist or by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.
